In America, perhaps, but not Japan. Schooling there is much more structured with higher expectations and more competitive than other countries. On top of my normal classes, which was a full day from morning to mid-afternoon, I also attended cram school after, which offered more specialized, intensive lessons in preparation of university entrance exams.
